Intended use
The turns ratio tester, DV Power TRT-H, is designed for measuring turns ratio of power and distribution transformers and verifies the turns ratio of instrument transformers. When turns ratio is measured alone, problems in the transformer core or winding turns are not visible. For that reason, the TRT-H device also detects excitation current and phase angle in addition to turns ratio and ratio deviation.
The list of instrument applications includes:
- measuring the turns ratio of power and distribution transformers
- verifying the turns ratio of instrument transformers
- calculating the turns ratio deviation
- measuring the excitation current of power, distribution, and instrument transformers
- measuring the phase angle of power, distribution, and instrument transformers
- checking the polarity of instrument transformers
How to use TRT-H?
Both single phase and three phase transformers can be tested with the TRT-H. TRT-H recommends user to properly connect instrument for each phase and each test while testing three phase transformers. Transformer ratio measurement can be performed in multiple tap positions. For easier analysis, all results are recorded in one record.
TRT-H turns ratio tester design
The instrument can provide a very low test voltage of just 1 V AC, which is needed for the majority of current transformers' turns ratio verification, but it can also produce a test voltage as high as 40 V AC for turns ratio test of power and distribution transformers.TRT-H is run by a built-in Li-Ion battery. At full charge, the battery can power up to 100 tests.
Connecting TRT-H to a test object
Two sets of cables, one for connecting to a high voltage transformer winding and the other for attaching to a low voltage transformer winding, are included with the TRT-H instrument. In order to evaluate the turns ratio of three phase transformers with specific vector groups, it may be necessary to short one phase on the high voltage side of the transformer using a provided jumper connection cable. The four-point measurement principle is the foundation for the connecting principle employed by TRT-H cables. This method produces accurate readings by employing discrete "Voltage Sense" connections attached to one side of the measuring clamps and "Current Cables" attached to the other side. The current wires and clamps' resistance has no real impact on the turns ratio measurement. This design assists in the providing of accurate and reliable results by minimizing the impact of any additional voltage drop in the measuring setup.
