A typical application of the protective bonding tester is the continuity test of the protective bonding conductors to verify that all conductive parts that are exposed to user contacts are properly connected to the ground. The test set complies with IEC 61010-1 safety standard. The protective conductor ensures that in the event of a failure, no dangerous voltage is present on the equipment's housing. In such a case, a life-threatening current could flow through the user if the housing were touched. This could happen if the resistance of the protective conductor is too high. The protective conductor should therefore reduce or in the best case eliminate the danger to persons. Therefore, all internal and external protective conductor connections must be checked for perfect performance.
This device could also be used for contact resistances measurement of non-inductive test objects used in the electric power industry or similar branches, such as:

  • High and medium voltage circuit breakers
  • High and medium voltage disconnecting switches
  • High-current bus bar joints
  • Cable splices
  • Welding joints
  • Fuses

Protective Bonding Tester Test Mode

The RMO-E tester is supplied with two different modes, SINGLE and CONTIN. Under SINGLE mode, only the test current can be selected, and under CONTIN mode, the test duration can also be selected (up to 300 seconds). This micro-ohmmeter is a precise measuring tool that generates a true DC ripple-free current with automatically regulated test ramps. During a test, the protective bonding tester ramps with increasing current before measuring and decreasing current after the measurement. This significantly decreases magnetic transients and ensures great accuracy. The pass/fail criteria is another feature that can be activated and gives the alarm if the measured resistance value is higher than the set Rmax value.

RMO-E Micro-Ohmmeter Design

The RMO-E is a reliable test device that can store up to 500 measurements in internal memory. A built-in thermal printer is available as an option. Free DV-Win software is included in the purchasing price and communicates with the micro-ohmmeter via USB or RS232 interface. It allows you to run the test remotely from a PC, download test results, analyze them, and generate fully configurable test reports. A high output voltage enables the measurement of a wide resistance range and the use of long and thinner test cables, which is a benefit. As a digital micro-ohmmeter, is the ideal choice for industries that require precise and consistent measurement of electrical resistance.

Connecting Protective Bonding Tester to a Test Object

The connection principle of the RMO-E tester corresponds to Kelvin’s (four-point) measurement principle. The measuring cables from the "Voltage Sense" terminals are attached as close as possible to the test object, and in between the current feeding cables. That way, the resistance of current cables and clamps is excluded from the resistance measurement.

RMO DV-Win Software provides several advanced features as a supplement to multiple functions of RMO devices. Testing in Continuous mode is upgraded with a sample time feature which allows user to record test results in specific time intervals set in seconds. After performed measurements results can be saved in a various formats and test report can be generated and saved or printed. Result can also be downloaded from the device to the PC by use of several different search filters.
For the RMO form of DV-Win software there is Help menu available, with detailed instructions and explanations of all functions and features.
